For the past few weeks, it seemed certain that the New England Patriots were going to draft Will Campbell, as the probability that either Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter was going to be available at four was getting slimmer and slimmer. While there was some chatter about a potential trade back, the Patriots decided to stay put and take Campbell at four.
Campbell is regarded as the best offensive lineman in the draft and was LSU’s starting left tackle all three years he was with the team. In his tenure with the Tigers, Campbell allowed just four sacks and 13 quarterback hits. Some notable accolades he earned were being named the 2024 SEC’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy recipient, 2024 consensus All-American, 2x First-Team All-SEC, and 1x Second-Team All-SEC.
Although he is seen as the best offensive lineman, his stock dropped due to his 32 ⅝ arm length at the combine, where people have raised questions whether he should be moved to a guard or remain at tackle, as Campbell himself said he is a left tackle. The Patriots are in dire need of a left tackle as they haven’t been able to fill the void in last year’s offseason and this year, where they notably whiffed on several free agent tackles.
Mike Vrabel seems sold on the idea of Campbell being a left tackle. When asked if he projects Campbell as a tackle prospect, Vrabel said, “I think you have to. I don’t understand how you can watch him play in the SEC, which is the best conference in football, against guys who are gonna get drafted. I don’t think you have to project it.”
I believe drafting Campbell is the right pick at four. Will Campbell is an elite prospect who has showcased his great skills, high IQ, and versatility. The Patriots’ offensive line has been extremely bad in recent years, especially last year, when they allowed 52 sacks, which was tied for the fifth most in the league, and ranked 31st in pass block win rate last season (51%).
Because Campbell is such a talented prospect and the Patriots need help on the offensive line, they had to draft Campbell. Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye took brutal shots last season, and the Patriots couldn’t afford to enter next season without a left tackle.
Campbell should enter next season as the starting left tackle. He brings a major boost to the offensive line and should be the hopeful, cornerstone left tackle. I give the Patriots an A- for drafting Campbell because he’s not only the best tackle, but the best lineman in the draft.
He provides the Patriots with hope, stability, and skill on the offensive line. With offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and offensive line coach Doug Marone mentoring him, he’s in a strong position to thrive. The worst-case scenario is that his arm length becomes a significant disadvantage, leading to a possible move to left guard, which could ultimately benefit him.
